A payline is a defined path through the reel positions used to assess a winning combination. It may be straight or zigzag. Matching symbols elsewhere on the screen do not necessarily form a winning line.
Read the line and the direction
Open the paytable or help screen. Look for the line diagram, the minimum matching-symbol count and the direction in which a combination must run. Many games evaluate consecutive reels from the left; the actual game’s rules take precedence. Special symbols can have separate conditions.
As a hypothetical example, a game might require three matching symbols beginning on reel one along an active line. Three matches beginning on reel two would not satisfy that particular rule. This is an illustration, not a rule for every game.
Fixed and selectable paylines
Fixed-line games keep their stated lines active while you choose among the available stake settings. Selectable-line games let you change the active line count. A combination on an inactive line does not count as a line win.

Calculate the whole spin cost
If a game specifies a monetary stake per line, multiply it by the active line count. The following examples assume no extra wager or feature cost:

If the screen already displays a total stake, do not multiply it by the line count again. If it displays credits, check the monetary value of each credit first. Confirm the final amount shown before a spin; optional extras can change the cost.
OLG PlaySmart explains credit denominations, paytables and why a payout can be smaller than the stake. For example, AU$0.30 returned from an AU$0.40 stake leaves a net loss of AU$0.10, even if the screen celebrates a paying combination.
Lines, ways and clusters are different
Traditional paylines follow specified paths. Ways-to-win systems evaluate qualifying symbols across adjacent reels without requiring one predetermined path. Cluster systems generally evaluate connected groups instead. Exact symbol counts and adjacency rules vary by game.
The developer 1spin4win describes these different structures. Read the specific help screen rather than assuming that a large “ways” number means that many selectable lines.
Line count does not tell you the return
A higher line count alone cannot establish a game’s RTP or volatility. The symbol probabilities, prize rules and overall game model matter. Activating more lines at an unchanged per-line stake increases the amount staked; it does not guarantee a profit.
If a bonus is active, check its maximum-bet rule against the relevant total stake. A small per-line amount is not automatically a small total bet.
